I'm excited to share my love of crochet with young makers!

Whether picking up a crochet hook for the very first time or already having made some projects, having a few basic supplies will help get a fun group of kids going on either learning or creating a team project.

These are the items I've previously used with PTAs/Schools at the start of a school year crochet club.
These are intentionally supplies geared towards learning & affordability.

1. Crochet Hooks — 5.5 mm (I)

A comfortable, beginner-friendly crochet hook.  A 5.5 mm hook is slightly larger than may normally be used for the yarn in order to allow better visibility of the stitches being learned.

Provides for 10 - Set of 10 hooks with stitch markers (another item listed below already done!).

2. Yarn — Medium Weight (#4)

Red Heart Super Saver is a great starter yarn.  Being acrylic it is an affordable, practical choice for beginners.
New crocheters will be directed to lighter colors since this give best visibility of stitches.
This pack is an affordable bundle with small skeins for each child to receive their own skein & the darker colors can be used by those with experience or as accents if we do get as far as a group project!

Provides for 36 - Kit linked here comes with 36 skeins (2-3 of those are colors which would be accents rather than for an individual).  Smaller kits are there if needed to hit correct number.

3. Stitch Markers

These little tools help identify where to turn a row when starting & are essential to seeing this at first.  They are included with the hooks above!!

4. Bag

Not truly "essential" for learning, but this makes it so much easier for kids to pack up & keep their supplies together.

YES they should be able to bring their yarn home in between, it's a bit like a band instrument - if they are interested in practicing in between they should definitely be able to!  So far we have had enough extra skeins from the yarn bundle for me to loan those out if a bag is forgotten for club day.

Provides for 20

Extras

These aren't necessary for getting started or to buy supplies, items likely already around.

  • Yarn needle: For weaving in yarn ends and finishing projects. - I carry these in my purse just about at all times so we are covered!

  • Small scissors: I generally have a pair of these with me too, if we happen to be in a room with available scissors that is great too.

A Couple Other Notes

  • Kids are welcome to use crochet supplies they already own if they are experienced & looking for more time on their projects.  I would give them them the provided supplies still & may ask them to make a few squares or such if we do plan on a group project.

I'm looking forward to an enjoyable club filled with creativity, new skills, and plenty of handmade accomplishments! 💜
