Oh Halloween — that season where creativity meets chaos and every home requires a parent to becomes part crafter, part magician! ✨
This year, my girls wanted to dress up as their favorite blue and pink alien buddies — mischievous, snuggly, and just a little bit out of this world. (No need to call the mouse police 😉 — these are inspired-by looks, not official costumes.)
Now being middle schoolers though, they didn't necessarily want exact costumes & they asked me if I could make them headbands with ears.
Between work, middle school musical helping, sports, and a mountain of to-dos, I wanted something adorable, comfy, and doable — a mix of Amazon finds and small handmade touches that still feel special.
🛍️ Step 1: Building the Blue Look (Stitch-Inspired)
Sometimes, one-click magic is the best magic.
I found nearly everything I needed on Amazon, and it ALL came in sets that covered both costumes — saving time, money, and my sanity — major wins!
-
Skirts: Light pink & navy blue set — one for each kiddo, soft and twirly.
-
Headbands: Fluffy alien ear headbands — instantly transform any child into a space cutie.
-
Gloves: Multi-color pack — pink, blue, gray, green, and yellow (the yellow pair is already off to Pikachu duty 🐭⚡).
-
Socks: Colorful striped set — cozy, vibrant, and perfect for mixing shades.
-
T-Shirts: Aqua blue/pink/white pack — layering made easy for unpredictable fall weather.
🎀 One-stop shopping: one cart, two costumes, zero panic attacks.

💗 Step 2: Crafting the Pink Look
Handmade memories > store-bought perfection.
For my pink alien, I wanted to add a touch of maker magic because the headband was missing a bit — handmade antennae using yarn and wire.
Here’s how we did it:
-
I-cord knitting machine: This one made perfect little cords — my 11-year-old loved helping.
-
Wire: Flexible craft wire for shaping — with her sister wearing the headband we figured out the right shape & length, giving it a cut in order to measure needed i-cord length.
-
Yarn: I had some in a color which worked perfect for us in the stash I'd already set aside for kid use, so we got lucky there. We used a worsted weight (4), although the label is long gone so I don't know the brand/name. I-cord machines usually max out at weight 4, so anything in a 3 or 4 should work well for this.
-
Tools: pliers, wire cutters, tapestry needle.
We wrapped the wire inside the i-cord for plush, springy antennae that boing just right.
(Even fixed a small gap mid-project — teamwork and giggles included 💕).
*Tip - getting the wire into the LONG i-cord took teamwork as I was struggling mightily on my own. We had made the i-cord about 60" and it was getting stuck early on. The trick was for her to hold it flat - straight out from where I was holding the wire, and this let me push it on much easier!

✨ Step 3: EZ Angel Tips for Busy Makers
-
Try the full costume on before trick-or-treat night — comfort is key!
-
Keep color tones consistent under daylight (LEDs can trick you).
-
Balance headbands by hot-gluing the wire base or wrapping it tightly (we included enough length to go under the headband & wrap around itself at the top).
-
Let your kids help — crafting together is half the fun and 100 % of the memory.

🌟 Step 5: Why Semi-DIY Wins Every Time
You don’t need to craft from scratch to create magic. Mixing store-bought ease with handmade heart keeps the fun — and keeps you sane.
Whether you’re the mom who sews sequins at midnight (I'm right there with you!) or the one who Prime-orders on her lunch break (also me!), you’re doing amazing. 💜
